THE owners of two ‘prime’ parking hotspots in Knutsford have been urged to implement restrictions to stop motorists from parking there.

Cars and vans parking on both Heritage Way, off Tatton Street, and Cotton Shop Yard in the town have caused Cotton Shop Yard, located off King Street and home to Cocaranti, Victoriana Tea Rooms and the Cheese Yard, is currently designated as ‘unadopted’ with Cheshire East Highways not wanting to take it on.

However, at a meeting of Knutsford Town Council on Monday, July 7, councillors and officers admitted they did not know who owned it.

In the past year volunteers at Knutsford Heritage Centre have criticised those parking on Heritage Way, owned by the Tatton Estate, as the mosaic at the top is a starting point for their popular tours around the town.

Knutsford Town Council has previously maintained Cotton Shop Yard but councillors said they needed to find out who owned it in a bid to stop motorists parking there.

Clr Vivien Davies said: “Cotton Shop Yard has been looked into on a number of occasions and no-one seems to know.”

Clr Peter Coan added: “There have been people who have had succesful personal accident claims on Cotton Shop Yard so there must be someone who knows who owns it because they’ve got money off them.”

Clr Coan suggested a bollard could be put up to prevent cars parking there but deputy town clerk Lisa Benskin said the council could leave themselves open to action if they put bollards up.

Clr Davies added: “We have to make sure that what ever we do is legal and there is no comeback on Knutsford Town Council.”

Clr Dean proposed the council finds out who owns Cotton Shop Yard and to contact the owner of Heritage Way to see if they will do anything to stop people parking on the heritage mosaic.
