HUNDREDS of footballing youngsters took part in a tournament to inspire a new generation to enjoy the beautiful game.

Barnton Wanderers organised the under nines competition, which saw more than 250 boys and girls in 20 mixed teams from across the north west take part with around 500 spectators.

The event was held at Cransley School, which allowed the club to take over the grounds for the event.

Anthony Carter-Aleksic, who helped to organise the event, said: “It was a fantastic day and a great advert for football.

“We had some young trainee referees on the day – we’re trying to encourage young refs in the game too.

“It was also about girls in sport.

“I work as a PE teacher so I know that getting girls interested in sport is very difficult.

“This was a chance to say there are football opportunities and we’re hoping it will encourage girls’ sport.

“We tried to make it a less competitive and really friendly event rather than focussing on winning and losing and we’ve had some incredible emails back saying it was the best run tournament people have had and can we have another.”

Barnton Wanderers FC are looking for new players to play in the Under 10s category next season and if anyone is interested contact Stefan Mills on 07715 480565 or email
