VILLAGERS are being urged to put forward a young person for an award which celebrates exceptional talent.

The call comes from Barnton Parish Council, which is seeking nominations for the 2014 Goddard Trophy.

The trophy was inaugurated by Ray and Clarice Goddard of The Beech Tree Stores in 1981.

“It was awarded over a number of years to a child in the village as recognition of their exceptional courage, bravery or ability,” said parish council clerk Phillip Evoy.

“The trophy was unearthed again in 2010, and is presented annually once more to a worthy recipient from within the community.”

This year the trophy will be presented at the Village and Produce Show, which is being organised by the parish council and will take place on Saturday, September 13 at the Memorial Hall.

Villagers are being asked if they know any young person from Barnton, who, during the past 12 months, has shown real bravery, courage in adversity or has demonstrated exceptional ability.

If so, and you would like to nominate them for the Goddard Trophy, please contact Mr Evoy by calling 07849 344940 or email Phillip at barntonpc@aol.com.

A nomination form will be sent out to readers wishing to put someone forward for the award, and the deadline for the receipt of nominations is Friday, August 29.

There is no lower age limit for those being nominated, but the upper age limit is set at 15 years of age as at September 13, 2014.

Teenager swimmer Martin Rodgerson received the award last year after being nominated by his grandma Mary Everton.

Martin was honoured for his athletic ability and charity work.

At the time of the award he has raised £500 for Salford University Kidscan through a sponsored silence and more than £200 from attending a swimming camp organised by Northwich Amateur Swimming Club.

As a dedicated member of the swimming club, Martin was an active campaigner in the club’s bid for an eight-lane swimming pool in Memorial Court, attending Cheshire West and Chester Council committee meetings whenever he could.

He was presented with the award at Barnton Fun Day.
