A PROJECT to improve the health of fish and chip fans in Northwich and Winsford has been given the seal of approval by Government and businesses.

The Salt Shaker initiative was launched by Cheshire Community Development Trust (CCDT) in mid Cheshire in 2012 after its success in other areas.

The scheme has seen a number of takeaways, fast food outlets and chip shops sign up to simply replace their traditional 17-hole salt shaker with a five-hole version supplied by CCDT.

On a visit to Northwich, health minister Jane Ellison talked to Arthur Neil, CCDT chief executive, about the scheme.

The trust has also written to all outlets again to invite them to take part, with Lucky Pete’s and Londis , in Winnington, and Phoenix Chippy, in Wharton, the latest to come on board.

Arthur said: “We only need a small amount of salt each day to meet our actual needs but many add salt to their cooking and then sprinkle lavishly onto their finished meals.

“This project doesn’t expect to change the world but is a baby step to make people aware of the risks of heart disease and stroke which can come from an excessive use of salt.

“Experience in other areas has shown that using the five-hole salt shaker which we will provide free to participating businesses produces an adequate amount to meet taste needs but not too much.

“Every outlet that takes part gets a couple of salt shakers free, plus some low sodium salt and a poster to say they are taking part and to encourage customers to use less salt.”

CCDT is running the project in partnership with the NHS Vale Royal Clinical Commissioning Group and Cheshire West and Chester Council.
