A THIRD of Cheshire residents turned out to vote in the European elections on Thursday with UKIP and Labour coming out on top.

North west Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are now Theresa Griffin, Afzal Khan and Julie Ward, from the Labour Party, Paul Andrew Nuttall, Louise Bours and Steven Marcus Woolfe, from UKIP, and Jacqueline Foster and Sajjad Karim, from the Conservative Party.

The election saw the Labour Party gain one seat, UKIP gain two and the Conservative Party lose one.

In Cheshire West and Chester the turn out was 31.27 per cent and UKIP won the majority of votes with 23,949.

The Conservative Party came second with 22,239 votes.

In Cheshire East the turn out was 32.6 per cent and the Conservative Party won the majority of votes with 30,893.

UKIP came second with 27,940 votes.

The overall turn out for the north west was 33.66 per cent.
