A MOUNTAIN leader is gearing up to help people in a climbing war this summer.

Andrew Wright, from Pickmere, is taking part in the War of the Roses Three Peaks Challenge, which will see up to 60 challengers attempting to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon within 24 hours.

Andrew, of Pickmere Lane, hopes to raise £200 for the charity Activate Sport Foundation, which aims to introduce sporting activities to children around the UK.

Challengers will be split into two teams, each headed by former Lancashire and Yorkshire cricket team captains.

Andrew said: “The challengers will be timed but ultimately it will not be a race but a quest for personal achievement and raising money for good causes.”

The challenge, which starts after the Twenty20 cricket match between Yorkshire and Lancashire, on June 27, will include 26 miles of walking and 10,000 ft of ascent and descent.

Andrew said: “It is a great opportunity for me to take part in such a prestigious and high profile event.

“I have lots of experience of challenge events and it will be a pleasure to contribute skills to this project.”
