RESIDENTS are being encouraged to open up about dementia this month.

The Alzheimer’s Society in Northwich is organising a number of events to mark Dementia Awareness Week from May 18 to 24.

These include an open day at the society’s Northwich office, at the Old Printworks, in Spencer Street, from 10am to 3pm on May 21 when people can pop in for tea or coffee and a chat.

From 3pm, there will be a Dementia Friends awareness session to help members of the public understand what it might be like to live with dementia and then turn that understanding into action.

Alzheimer’s Society is aiming to have one million Dementia Friends and anyone interested in going to the session should book a place by calling 01606 781110.

On Friday, May 23, there will be a stand opposite Marks and Spencer, in Leicester Street, from 10am.

Diane Riley, services manager for the Alzheimer’s Society in west Cheshire, said: “Dementia has replaced cancer as the health condition people fear most.

“It is therefore no surprise that many people feel confused or even ashamed to talk about it.

“We all bury our heads in the sand from time to time but it is important to seek help.

“The sooner you know what you’re dealing with, the sooner you can get on with your life and feel in control again.

“These events are a great opportunity find out more about how Alzheimer's Society can help you.”

The charity is also hoping that businesses and individuals will hold their own events between May 18 and 24.
