WOMEN’S cycling will be doubly celebrated when a national race is held in Northwich in April.

The Cheshire Classic Women’s Road Race is launching a new competition as it appeals for nominations for its Inspirational Star of 2014.

The competition, which closes on April 4, seeks nominations for inspiring bike riders with a chance to win an Epic-Scott-Contessa jersey and Delamere Diary hamper.

Race organiser Andy Wood, from Weaver Valley Cycling Club, said: “2013 was a great year for women’s cycling with lots of new riders, young and old, taking to two wheels for the first time.

“We know firsthand at Weaver Valley Cycling Club just how much last year’s race played a big part in that with riders being inspired from watching the race leading to then joining the club.

“To celebrate we are looking for nominations for a woman or girl of any age or ability.

“It could be that they were inspired by the Cheshire Classic, took up cycling and within a year had lost a lot of weight. They could have completed their first ever sportive. They may have started racing for the first time or joined their first cycling club.”

The Cheshire Classic has also announced a new sponsor, Sport Cheshire, alongside existing sponsors Taylor Wimpey, Delamere Dairy, Epic Cycles, de Vere Venues and Your Sports Therapist.

Rebecca Bryning, from Sport Cheshire, said: “Being part of the Cheshire Classic was a no-brainer for us.

“One of Sports Cheshire’s aims is raising awareness and the participation of women’s sport and we are delighted to be supporting the Classic as a development partner.”
