STORYTELLING, salt works, wartime and women will feature in an event taking visitors back in time in Northwich.

Northwich Library, in Witton Street, is hosting the an event on Tuesday, February 4, when life in First World War Northwich will be evoked.

Storyteller Elizabeth Morris will look at the changing lives of women through the eyes of her ancestor Violet, the wife of salt baron George Hamlett, as men went to war and women took over the heavy work of the salt pans.

George Hamlett & Sons were based in Winsford and their salt operation was huge, not only in Cheshire, but with shipping offices in Liverpool and London.

George and Violet’s four sons, including Elizabeth’s grandfather, fought in France and one of her great uncles was killed.

Mid Cheshire’s women were also employed in munitions factories, an aspect of wartime life at home that will also feature in the storytelling event.

Clr Paul Dolan, a Cheshire West and Chester councillor for the Winnington and Castle ward, said:“This event is part of National Storytelling Week and will appeal to people interested in local history.

“The storytelling concentrates on the local salt industry and its workers during a period of great change between 1914 and 1918.

“I am sure that this will be a fascinating event.”

The storytelling on February 4 is at 2.15pm and will include light refreshments.

Tickets, priced £3, are available at the enquiry desk at Northwich Library, or call the library on 01606 44221.
