Morrisons' fire alarm fears
A FIRE alarm system at Morrisons’ Produce site in Northwich will be fixed after workers expressed fears for their health and safety.
An employee from the Gadbrook site on Kings Street, who wished to remain anonymous, contacted the Guardian to express their concerns about the company’s fire procedures after a drill on January 3.
The worker said there was a lack of communication due to the broken system and that it was a breach of health and safety regulations.
“It is endangering lives as people do not know there is a fire drill except a verbal talk of ‘fire’,” the employee said.
“If there was a real fire there would be loss of life due to negligence.”
Morrisons confirmed a fire drill had taken place and having identified an issue with the alarm system, a new fire alarm would be installed by the end of January.
A spokesperson said: “We carried out a routine fire drill as part of our safety checks at the start of the year and discovered an issue with our alarm system.
“As a result, we implemented an alternative method of evacuating our colleagues for the drill. This was checked with the local fire authority.
“A new fire alarm system has been ordered and will be installed later this month.”
