ANTI-HS2 campaigners are urging the local authority to establish their position on a proposed £50billion high-speed rail link as soon as possible.

Members of Mid Cheshire Against HS2 want to hear Cheshire West and Chester Council’s stance on the project after neighbouring council Cheshire East recently gave it their conditional support.

Spokesperson Ewen Simpson said the anti-HS2 group cannot understand the council’s delay in producing a detailed consultation report.

“Surely they have had sufficient time by now,” he said. “We need clarity urgently.

“The only response so far is ‘we hope to be in a position to come to a conclusion by the end of the month’, by which we think they mean January.”

Mr Simpson said the group will be contacting councillors this week to ask a number of questions regarding their individual position on the proposed high-speed rail link.

“We will also strongly point out that no matter how far away from the proposed HS2 ‘corridor’ your ward is, your vote will seriously impact on those of us who live near or within the HS2 corridior,” he added.

A Cheshire West and Chester Council spokesperson said the authority is still considering its position, but expects to have reached a verdict by the end of the month.

Elsewhere, protestors from Mid Cheshire Against HS2 and All Cheshire Against HS2, pictured, greeted Chancellor George Osborne as he left a meeting with constituents at Winsford’s Lifestyle Centre.
