A COMMUNITY centre would have to be run by villagers rather than the parish council in Kingsmead.
Residents have asked Kingsmead Parish Council if there is anything it can do to help but the council has officially responded to say it can only offer support.
Speaking at the latest parish council meeting Jo O’Donoghue, parish clerk, said: “I’ve posted a message on two Facebook groups dedicated to Kingsmead and said that the parish council itself doesn’t have the manpower, resources or land to run a community centre.
“I’m sure that there would be support if a community group wanted to come forward.”
The council has investigated the former Blockbuster store, in Kingsmead Square, but discovered it would cost £6,000 a month in rent.
“That’s a lot of children’s birthday parties,” said Clr Emma Bannister.
