TECHNOLOGY whizz has created a mobile phone app used by more than 100 students at his Northwich-based college.

Will Bell, an upper sixth student at Sir John Deane’s College, developed the app after taking part in the Nuffield Bursary project which involved completing a four-week placement with the University of Liverpool.

The 17-year-old was working under the computer science department team and was given the task of creating an iPad app that shows how robots interact and could be used to teach part of their course.

“I was very lucky that I got onto a placement that was about something I was interested in anyway,” said the Comberbach resident.

Will, who studies maths, further maths and physics, received an outstanding award from the Nuffield Foundation and has used the skills he learnt during the placement to create an app called ‘onFrees’ that allows students to share their college timetable with their friends.

“It was really enjoyable and I used the skills I learned during the placement to create my own free app which people can use to share their college timetable so they know when their friends are on free periods,” he added.

Pauline Lowrie, tutor at Sir John Deane’s College, said: “It is great to see Will putting the skills and knowledge he has learned to good, practical use and the college is very proud that his work during the project was recognised with an outstanding award.

“The Nuffield Bursary is a brilliant project and we have many science students taking part as it is a wonderful opportunity to broaden their skills and experience.”
