A FORMER gangster has warned Northwich students about the dangers of organised crime and why he turned his back on the underworld.

Simon Morley was involved in international organised crime for 15 years, taking part in drug deals, protection rackets, violence and the laundering of millions of pounds in England and Spain.

His activities were brought to national attention when he was filmed by undercover reporter Donald MacIntyre as part of World in Action.

Although his life of crime meant he had a lavish lifestyle, boasting yachts and high performance cars, things came to a head when an attempt was made on his life, making Simon realise that things had to change.

Simon - who returned to college and university and now works as a physiotherapist, as well as mentoring and counselling vulnerable adults and young people through his company, Mixed Foundations -  told Sir John Deane’s College students why crime does not pay and warned them of its dangers.

He spoke to psychology students who are studying forensic psychology including ‘why people turn to crime’ and ‘what makes a criminal case’, and sociology students who explore crimes of the underworld within the crime and deviance module.

“Simon’s talk was absolutely fascinating and gave students a real insight into the topics they are studying for their A-levels,” said sociology teacher Sarah-Jane Hair.

“We are delighted that Simon was able to visit the college and share his experience with our students who were given lots to think about.”
