Artist inspired by comic books showcases his work
AN artist who takes inspiration from comic books and graphic novels has had his work displayed in a Northwich gallery.
London Road resident Tom Riley first fell in love with art when he was a child and now, more than 20 years later, is delighted to have his work on display for all to see as part of the autumn collection at ArtWork Studios on Navigation Road.
The 28-year-old, who studied art at Mid Cheshire College before going on to complete a degree in fine art at the University of Central Lancashire, said: “It’s really great to have my work on show and for people to be able to see it and it is great that it’s somewhere in Northwich.”
The exhibition showcases Tom’s striking graphic portraits, which he describes as a sort of pop art, similar to that used in the comic books he would read as a child.
“Art is something I have always loved, ever since reading comic books when I was younger and copied the drawings – it just went from there.”
Tom’s love of art was increased further when he began studying at Mid Cheshire College’s London Road Studios in 2001.
He said: “I have many fond memories of studying there and memories of the inspiring teaching staff, including Carol Eves.”
Tom creates his portraits at the Navigation Road studios, where he has occupied a studio on a permanent basis since April.
ArtWork Studios founder Carolyn Shepherd said it is fascinating to watch him work.
She said: “I love the expressive faces and big soulful eyes of the people that Tom creates in his paintings – each with a life of their own – I can’t help but make up stories about who they are and what they are thinking.
“Tom is very productive and his imagination brings forth a stream of these intriguing characters which he has brought together into a solo show.”
“It’s fascinating to watch him working, he is very dedicated and paints meticulously to create the faces that he visualises in his imagination.
“He is also a great guy to work with in the studio and all the artists here feel he deserves every success with his work.”
The Autumn Season exhibition, including Tom’s work, is sponsored by Waitrose and can be viewed at the studios until December 14 on Thursdays, 12pm to 9pm, Fridays, 12pm to 4pm and Saturdays, 12pm to 4pm.
