A MUM has launched a national campaign fighting Government changes to the lifelong help promised to her son.
Dorothy Jump, from Moulton, is furious that an indefinite claim for financial assistance under the Disability Living Allowance will mean nothing under new rules.
Dorothy, a single parent, is a carer for her 39-year-old son Christian, who has severe learning disabilities.
She said: “My son has an indefinite claim on Disability Living Allowance but the Benefits Agency has said they’re taking that away and people will have to claim every five years.
“It’s a nightmare, why do we have to keep explaining?
“I don’t think it’s right to put everyone under the same umbrella.
“I know it’s targeting the people that defraud the system but it affects the most vulnerable people in life.”
The Department for Work and Pensions will start to replace the Disability Living Allowance with the new Personal Independence Payment (PIP) from April next year.
This affects people aged between 16 and 64 with a long-term ill health condition or disability.
People will be assessed on the basis of how their condition affects their life so the change will include regular reviews.
Dorothy has launched an online petition against the changes, which has already attracted 700 signatures.
She is petitioning Iain Duncan Smith MP, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Mike Penning MP, Minister for Disabled People and her own MP Stephen O’Brien, constituency MP for Eddisbury.
Dorothy, who has been a trustee of Cheshire and Warrington Carers’ Centre for almost 20 years, said: “In 1993 the Conservative Government changed the benefits system from an attendance allowance to the Disability Living Allowance, so why can’t they do what they did then? Why not put an indefinite claim in it?
“They don’t realise what they’re doing – they sit there in Parliament doing these things and changing the benefits system and don’t know what they’re putting people through.
“If someone’s got an indefinite claim why take it away?”
