Northwich worker sleeps rough to tackle homelessness
10:00am Sunday 20th October 2013 in News
AN IT worker spent a night sleeping rough in the cold and rain to help fight youth homelessness.
Northwich woman Molly Smith, who works at FDM Group, in Manchester, endured the challenge to raise funds for Action for Children.
She said: “It was rather cold, I had three layers on and a sleeping bag and couldn’t stop shivering!
“It was also non-stop rain throughout the night so my sleeping bag got wet.
“I tried to get some sleep – I probably had about two hours but kept waking up every so often – I had an achy back the next day.
“But although the sleeping part was uncomfortable it was a really enjoyable night.”
Molly was joined by her colleagues Madeleine Field and Roxanne Cuddy during the Byte Night, an event that is supported by the IT and technology sector to help tackle the root causes of youth homelessness, keeping vulnerable young people off the streets and enabling them to build better lives.
The night saw 100 people setting up camp in Manchester city centre for the evening.
Byte Night began 16 years ago with 30 individuals raising £35,000 and it has now grown to a UK-wide event.
The 2013 sleeper amount totalled more than 1,000 people who have raised around £850,000 so far.
Molly. a marketing and recruitment assistant, said “I heard about Byte Night at work, and I wanted to get involved straight away as I think it such a worthwhile cause, especially with working in Manchester where there are a staggering number of homeless people on the streets.
“When people started to hear about the sleep out, so many wanted to sponsor us, especially FDM Group who gave us a generous donation.
“Until the sleep out I had been fortunate enough to not understand what it is like to sleep rough, so I wanted to not only help to raise money for Action for Children, but to also understand the harsh conditions homeless youths face on an everyday basis – which I can say is hard especially in the rainy conditions.”
