Diary sheds light on ICI anniversary
THE Guardian has been inundated with calls and messages following the Remember When picture special showing the 75th anniversary celebrations of Brunner Mond and ICI.
Last week, Hartford resident Pam Jeffs contacted the Guardian after the article prompted her mother, Vera, to dig out her old diaries.
“My mum grew up in Northwich and has always kept diaries of her daily events,” said Pam.
“She now lives in Knutsford but I always pass on the Northwich Guardian – she was really interested in the article and it got her looking back at her diaries.”
At the time of the 75th anniversary celebrations - which took place on May 21, 1949 – Vera was working in the research labs at ICI.
Her diary entries refer to the weather at the time, receiving her tickets for the celebrations and the day itself.
On May 16, Vera wrote: “It has rained at last on very hard ground. The fair has started to come to the Jubilee Field.”
The entry on May 19 said: “We have been given our tickets for the 75th anniversary to use: two ice creams, two mineral waters, one tea (meal) and six rides on the fair.”
On May 21, the day of the event itself, Vera wrote: “Marvellous day. We saw Richard Murdoch and Billy Tennant. The fair was very big. We stayed until 11pm to watch the fireworks.”
Pam added: “Mum still keeps a diary now – she has included a lot of things over the years, including all of the things she did during the war.”
