Barnton couple make history after tying the knot at St Luke's
Hollie and Mike Johns are the first couple to tie the knot at St Luke's Church's new home at Winnington Rec.
A NORTHWICH bride and groom have made history by being the first to tie the knot in the new home of a Winnington church.
More than 140 people descended on Winnington Park Recreation Club on Saturday to see Hollie née Webb and Mike Johns enter into holy matrimony.
The Park Road complex has been home to St Luke’s Church since it relocated in May ahead of extensive repairs to the existing church on Dyar Terrace.
Barnton residents Mike and Hollie - who met in Benidorm three years ago - are the first to wed at the temporary church, which holds the majority of its services in the former Brunner Mond public library building.
The happy couple were joined by their closest family and friends, including Mike’s two children, 15-year-old bridesmaid Millie and 11-year-old usher Ben.
“We decided that we didn’t want to have a day do because that means everyone has to go home and then come back – we didn’t want that,” explained 40-year-old Mike, who works as a property investment consultant.
“We knew we wanted to get married in a church but we had a few problems finding one.
“It was only when we went to Winnington Rec to finalise the details for the evening celebrations that we realised St Luke’s Church had moved there.
“We knew straight away that that was where we wanted to have it – it was the perfect venue.
“I’m the first team captain for Winnington Park Cricket Club and I have family who worked for Brunner Mond – that was the original Bruner Mond recreation building so it just seemed fitting to have the ceremony there.
“The day was absolutely perfect.”
27-year-old Hollie, who works as a gas fitter for Weaver Vale Housing Trust said: “It was a lovely day and it was really nice being the first ones to get married there – we were the first one to sign the book too which was really nice.”
The newlyweds will spend the next 10 days soaking up the sun on in the same resort where they originally met.
Hollie added: “We are definitely looking forward to starting married life and starting a bigger family.”
