Macmillan Coffee Mornings take mid Cheshire by storm
TASTY cakes, a good cuppa and plenty of laughter were enjoyed in coffee mornings across mid Cheshire on Friday.
Residents, schools, businesses and organisations held fun events with the serious purpose of raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of the charity’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning fundraiser.
At the Blue Cap pub, in Sandiway, Helen Mills organised an array of activities to raise as much money as she could in memory of her mum Pauline, who died in March 2012 after a battle with cancer.
Pauline Mills was the face of Sainsbury’s to many in Northwich and a tireless supporter of many of mid Cheshire’s charities.
Helen said: “The inspiration behind this whole thing was my mum.
“Macmillan Cancer Support was so good to her and supportive to my dad when she was poorly.”
A Great British Blue Cap Bake Off, with categories for sponge cakes, cupcakes, biscuits and treats, was the centrepiece of Helen’s event, which also included a jewellery stall, prize draw and a kids corner, itself complete with indoor bouncy castle borrowed from her nieces and a storybook corner.
“It started off with me just doing a coffee morning,” Helen said.
“Then I thought ‘how can I get people to bring stuff in?’ and that’s where the idea of the bake off came from, then it just snowballed into a huge event.
“I’m glad to have done it because every penny counts.”
Helen was joined by Robert Crowther, from the Devonshire Bakery, and Guardian chief reporter Gina Bebbington in judging the bake off.
Robert, the fourth generation to take on the family business, has judged other baking competitons, including the recent Car Fest North, at Oulton Park.
“When you first look at the entries you look for finish and decoration,” he said.
“Then you look at texture, then flavour, then bake quality.”
Casey-Jane Ashbrook won the cupcake category with Vicky Mort winning the sweet treats category and Diana Jackson scooping first place in the popular sponge cake category with a lemon drizzle.
