Litter is rubbish in Kingsmead
BROKEN glass and litter are disgusting Kingsmead residents who are urging the community to have some civic pride.
The issue came up at the latest Kingsmead Parish Council where a man spoke up during the public forum.
“This isn’t some kind of cheap and nasty housing estate we live in, it’s predominantly middle class, so you would think people would have some civic pride in the area,” he said.
“Should we be doing something about it to generate some pride?”
He said it had become bad during the summer.
“I’ve noticed the litter on this estate predominantly this summer, on a Saturday morning and Sunday morning it’s really disgusting,” he said.
“It’s mainly generated by the takeaways and if you come past at 7pm on a Saturday evening there’s 10 to 15 youths congregating.
“I pick rubbish up as I go along when I’m walking the dog because I’m that disgusted, and I know other people are the same, but it’s not our job to do so.”
He said he didn’t think it was Sir John Deane’s College students leaving the rubbish because it happens at weekends rather than weekdays.
Clr Emma Bannister said the council would remind residents of their duties in the next parish newsletter.
“We need to talk to people about explaining to children, teenagers and themselves to think about the environment we all live in,” she said.
“We will also speak to the shops.
“In the past the takeaways have put a large bin out on busy nights and days so that pizza trays don’t block normal bins.
“We’ll also send something to the schools and colleges.
“Sir John Deane’s College does take it seriously, they just have no control over what the kids do when they leave the gates.”
