PCSOs help youngsters reach new heights
Children from Northwich and Winsford have taken part in the sessions held at Audley Climbing Centre in Staffordshire.
A NORTHWICH PCSO is helping youngsters to reach new heights with his latest community project.
PCSO Phil Hambleton is one of five officers from Northwich and Winsford who have spent their summer engaging with children and teenagers, encouraging them to take part in a number of climbing sessions throughout the school holidays.
The sessions, held at Audley Climbing Centre, in Staffordshire, have been funded by Moulton and Davenham councillors Gaynor Sinar, Helen Weltman and Elton Watson - who each donated £500 – and have helped to improve the relationship between police and young people, as well as giving youngsters something to do over the long summer break.
“We’ve done eight sessions so far,” said PCSO Hambleton, who was joined by PCSOs Kelly Mankee, Kat Stock, Kevin McShane and Kenneth Williamson.
“We did the first one in February, one in May, one in July and five over the summer holidays.
“Everyone really enjoyed it – there will definitely be more to come.
“Thank you to the councillors for giving us the money.”
Each three-hour session saw up to 10 youngsters take part.
“We ran the programme in conjunction with Winsford so we had kids from both Northwich and Winsford taking part,” said PCSO Hambleton.
Children were nominated to take part by youth clubs, schools and other PCSOs.
PCSO Hambleton added: “We are not trying to reward bad behaviour but we don’t want groups of young people hanging around parks because they have got nothing to do – this gives them something to do.
“It encourages them to work together and experience new things.”
PCSO Hambleton enjoyed the sessions so much that he has now become a member of the centre, run by Peak Pursuits Ltd.
“I’ve been back climbing myself since the last session,” said PCSO Hambleton.
“We’ll be holding more climbing sessions very soon and anyone who wants to take part just needs to call me at the station.”
