OLYMPIC spirit lives on across the country, but for one Cuddington doctor London 2012 has heralded a slightly different legacy.
Jenny Howard, 50, is a member of the Games Maker Choir founded in the Olympic Park last summer and is now rising to the unique challenge of lending her voice to what has become a YouTube hit.
Along with six of her fellow choir members, Jenny has recorded the Volunteers’ Anthem to the theme of I Will Survive as part of a music video in support of the National Lottery’s 2012 legacy campaign.
“It was great fun – if somewhat surreal,” she said.
“If you would have told me a year ago that I’d be singing on a rooftop in London, I wouldn’t have believed you.
“It’s a great tune with some cheesy but poignant lyrics and I really hope it inspires others to give up a bit of their time if they can.”
The video has received nearly 30,000 hits and been broadcast to 4.2 million people via BBC Big Screens.
Jenny responded to a notice in the Games Maker Newsletter last year and, after one quick rehearsal, found herself performing centre stage at the bandstand in the Olympic Park.
“I decided to volunteer because I really believe in the Olympic spirit and the Games as a whole and wanted to be part of it in some capacity,” she added.
Jenny became a team leader for the 2012 workforce operations at the athlete's village, which meant focussing on keeping the other Gamesmakers happy.
“I also got to witness the comings and goings of all the athletes and watch them having their meals and doing their shopping!
“It's a cliché, but I have a great life and do like giving back.”
National Lottery Good Causes director Jackie O’Sullivan believes the anthem is testament to the projects and support of the volunteers throughout the Games.
“It wouldn’t have been possible without the time and talents of Jenny and the wonderful Games Maker Choir,” she said.
