POLICE in Northwich apprehended a wanted teenager after he was caught paddling a dinghy along the River Weaver in the middle of the night.
The 17-year-old from Northwich was one of three boys caught by officers piloting the inflatable craft towards a boat yard around midnight last night, August 20.
The teenage fugitive was wanted for failing to turn up at an earlier Chester Magistrates Court hearing.
The trio were intercepted by the police helicopter, which was seen circling above the watercourse by residents in Kingsmead between 11.30-12.30pm.
An eyewitness who contacted the Guardian said they had seen officers patrolling the canal bank with torches.
Officers were able to apprehend one male, while the other two made off on foot.
A Spokesman for Northwich Neighbourhood Policing Unit said: “We had three lads on the river in an inflatable dinghy going towards the boat yard off Saxons Lane in Northwich.
“We got a grip on one and two made off.
“One was recognised as a wanted male who we had been looking for for a few weeks.
“He was wanted for failing to appear in court.
“We got him at a home address a few hours later and he was put before the magistrates in Chester this morning.”
The other two accomplices were released without charge.
