WAITROSE has called off its search for staff after receiving 1,400 applications for 140 jobs within days of advertising its vacancies.
The supermarket, which is still being built at Hayhurst Quay, in Northwich, and is set to open in the autumn, launched its recruitment drive at the start of August but the window was closed early following the overwhelming response.
Nigel Keen, Waitrose director of development, said: “It's been a phenomenal response and we are really encouraged by the calibre of applications as well as so many people wanting to work for our business.
“We pride ourselves on ensuring our shops have a local identity and that starts with the staff we employ – we look forward to welcoming successful candidates in the near future.”
The supermarket will now go through the applications before inviting candidates to local group interviews, which are due to take place in September.
Places will be allocated in those interviews to candidates put forward by Jobcentre Plus to provide opportunities for local unemployed people.
Weaver Vale MP Graham Evans, who has organised two annual jobs fairs in his constituency, said: “I think this is really exciting news for Northwich and I hope that Northwich people, local people, get these jobs.
“I wish all the applicants good luck and I’m pleased Waitrose have had so much interest.”
Clr Gaynor Sinar, from Cheshire West and Chester Council and founder of Northwich Independent Retailers Association (NIRA), said: “Northwich is a good place to be – the people of Northwich want a prestige store like Waitrose and want to be associated with it by working there.
“There is going to be between 1,400 and 1,600 jobs created with all the new development in Northwich.
“In the next few years the infrastructure is going to explode and there’s going to be enough jobs for all these people.
“There will be a snowball effect because other shops will see Waitrose and think ‘we want some of this’ and will come to Northwich.
“There are a lot more opportunities coming the way of Northwich people.”
