HS2 debate sets Northwich communities against each other

NEIGHBOURING communities in Northwich are being set against each other by a new high speed rail link for the UK.

The proposed route of Phase Two of the £32billion High Speed Two (HS2) line was revealed on January 28 and hailed as an ‘engine for growth’ by Chancellor and Tatton MP George Osborne.

But rural communities across Northwich fear the impact it will have, with the Birmingham to Manchester leg running through Whatcroft, Lach Dennis, Lostock Green, Lostock Gralam and Pickmere.

At a meeting of Wincham Parish Council last Wednesday, Pickmere stud owner John Keleher asked residents for their support in signing a petition against the route, which is set to cut through the heart of his land.

He said: “We have had a letter to tell us that our land will be compulsory purchased. It is such a shock.

“We have learned so much about HS2 over the last three and a half weeks.

“We are going to be totally destroyed by HS2.”

But clr Dominic Turner, a member of Wincham Parish Council, expressed his concern that objecting to the route could cause further problems for Wincham.

He said: “I feel very sorry for the guy who has been served a notice for his farm already and people are signing his petition.

“But what if they decide to save his farm and what if they move the route 300m closer to our village.

“Every single person is going to come back here and ask what’s going on.

“Wincham is going to be affected by the proposed route, mostly construction wise, but I think we are getting away with it as a village.

“It is bad for farmers but once it is built, they will be able to farm right up to the line again.

“I just don’t want us to take a stance that we live to regret.”

Vice chair Clr Kenton Barker, said: “It does not matter if we oppose HS2 or not, but the one thing we need to try and make sure is that we screen it from the village.”

Fellow parish councillor Annie Makepeace said: “We are custodians of the village, we don’t own it and we have to protect it for future generations.”

However, the discussion wasn’t all doom and gloom, with Clr Ian Parr joking that HS2 will ‘make it impossible to train spot’.

Wincham Parish Council is awaiting a meeting with an officer from Cheshire West and Chester Council before it makes any formal decision on how to proceed.

Typical argument and NIMBY attitude. We should all oppose this rail line in our midst no matter where or who's land it crosses. The only way to stop it is a joint effort by all concerned.
Either you are for it or against it that's what it comes down to.
The old saying " United we stand' applies in this case.
All or nothing not arguing "It's his bit not mine" will get us nowhere.

WELL said,J Bear,I don't know of anyone who will benefit from this.

The best idea is to send it back to the drawing board.

Billions of pounds to be spent, communities wrecked, wildlife wiped out, pollution increased. All for a few people to get to London 20 minutes quicker. Everyone in Cheshire should be set firm against what is all but a politicians vanity project. If David Cameron wants a legacy then let him be remembered as the man who expanded high speed fibre broadband across the rural economy and negated the need for business to be done in large cities. Minds across the country not meetings in London is what is required. Everybody wins then

Could someone please inform me how the HS2 will benefit the people of Mid-Cheshire?

No point in approaching our MP who thinks that the project is an "engine for growth"
Is this not a time for Parish Councils of all villages adversely affected by the HS2 route to band together? Perhaps each village could have a couple of representatives to consult with representatives from other villages? If people don't speak out and make their opinions known, this project will just be literally "bulldozed" through.
I know that some villages are affected more than others but I think we should concentrate on the bigger picture. We should not be setting village against village, rather it be villages against this apparently "not consulting, not listening, not caring Government".
If enough people are motivated to actually do something about this, we need to start shouting...... very loudly.....and now!!

As an aside to my last post, my village is unaffected by HS2, but why ruin a beautiful county so that the PM can have a life size train set? Oh! I'm also apolotical.

As a person who regularly uses trains to travel to London to visit my family, I believe that what the public needs is more affordable and comfortable rail transport. The price of tickets is getting ridiculous.

HS2 is a lunatic proposal which will just benefit the very few, who normally travel at somebody else's expense, so that they commute or travel to London for morning meetings and get back home for tea. Ordinary working people will just not be able to afford to use it but will still be ripped off through their taxes to pay for its construction.

By the way, don't expect any help from George Osborne in opposing it. He has made it clear with his limp token opposition to the Northwich waste incinerator that he only gets interested when the posher end of his constituency is threatened. "All in this together " ; he must be joking.
