Buffs club calls time

A MIX of trading difficulties and debt have led to the closure of a popular members club in Northwich.
Witton Street’s RAOB club, affectionately known as the Buffs club, closed its doors yesterday, Monday, after years of debt became impossible to fight.
The club had been home to the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes since they took over the premises in 1977, with the Northwich branch of the Royal British Legion also based there.
It had been suggested that the club was to close at the end of March but a sign announcing the closure was placed on the club’s door on Monday morning.
It said: “We are sorry to inform you that the club has now ceased trading as of Monday, February 11.”
Club secretary Tony Southern confirmed the closure.
He said: “The club is completely closed as of today [Monday] and there is no chance of it reopening.
“It is basically due to trading difficulties and the difference between the number of people coming in through the door against the number of people going out of the door.
“We’ve had a lot of people use the club over the years and we had maybe three or 400 members on the books but there was a lot of debt owed to HMRC from previous years and we just can’t pay it – we have never been able to fight it all off.
“There was going to be a winding up order put in place but we decided it would be best to wind it up ourselves.”
The closure comes just one week after the much-loved Witton Chimes also called last orders.
Mr Southern added: “We hope that once we get all of this sorted out we can go and look for smaller premises and come back fighting.
“I would just like to thank everyone for their support over the years and for using the club, but sadly we just can’t fight this off.”
