MEMORIAL hall memories are being recorded for posterity in advance of its closure in March.

Workshops were held at the hall, in Chesterway, and at Weaver Hall Museum, in London Road, so residents could tell stories and share memorabilia from more than 50 years of history at the venue.

Ken Greenhough, 75, attended a Collect memory capture event at the museum.

He and his band, Ken Greenhough and his Echoes, played at Northwich Memorial Hall many times in the 1960s.

“We supported the bigger bands, at the time they were very good up and coming bands, like the Beatles, but they weren’t famous then, though they were pushing it,” he said.

“It was incredible, the hall used to get packed out and the atmosphere was brilliant.

“We were one of the major bands in the area so we were pretty good.

“We were offered the chance to turn professional but unfortunately one of the guys in the band had the opportunity to go to university.”

But Ken never lost sight of music, moving from rock ‘n’ roll to folk and then country music with the band Calico Jack, which has been playing for about 20 years.

“For people like myself who have performed there it’s about nostalgia,” he said.

“It’s a shame it’s closing but things have to progress.”

Teams of students from Mid Cheshire College have been filming people talking about the hall and their memories.

Tom Ashley, production manager for his team, said: “You do feel a bit of pressure being responsible for something that’s a genuine piece of work for the community itself.”

Memories will be used by artist Katayoun Dowlatshahi to create a legacy artwork in the new Memorial Court building.
