London Road Studio hosts bronze sculptures

ART lovers will be ‘catching the moment’ this week as the first exhibition takes place at the London Road Studios in Northwich.

The studios were, until August, used as the arts department for Mid Cheshire College, but remained empty until the London Road Collective, a group of artists who all studied at the art school, decided to put the space to good use.

Opening to the public for the first time today night, Monday, the studio houses large exhibition spaces filled with natural light, double height ceilings and original architectural features.

Kingsley artist Tony Evans will be have the honour of displaying his work first, with his exhibition ‘Catching the Moment’ running at the studios until November 23.

Tony specialises in animals in action, using mainly copper and bronze, but will also be displaying Olympic athletes in his exhibition on London Road.
More than 20 sculptures will be on display.

Tony, whose work has been shown at the V&A museum in London, said: “I’m hoping that the exhibition can drum up some interest in the art centre to stop it being demolished.”

As well as having his exhibition at the London Road Studios, Tony is also Artist in Residence at the Hartford Campus of Mid Cheshire College, where he helps budding young artists.

He said: “I go into the school and let the students see how I work and help them with any problems they may be having. Sometimes there will be projects and we can work hand in glove.”

Whitegate woman Carolyn Shepherd, who set up the London Road Collective, said: “Tony’s stunning sculptures of athletes are perfect for the new gallery which is in the former gymnasium where the stained glass windows show pictures of sporting activity.

“Tony has exhibited and sold work in the V&A in London, so I am honoured to have his support for this new initiative.

“Tony inspired me to take up sculpture when he was a resident artist at London Road Art College at the time when I was a student there.”

Tony’s exhibition is running at the London Road Studios until November 23, from 12pm to 4pm daily.

To accompany the exhibition, two life drawing study days will be taking place on November 10, 10am to 4pm and November 17, 10am to 4pm.
