Trick or treat?

JUST a few minutes of a horror film are enough to have me hiding behind the sofa but strangely, Halloween has always been one of my favourite times of year.

Although trick or treating is something I’ve long since grown out of, as a child, I used to love dressing up in scary outfits and knocking on all the neighbours’ doors.

I would relish in bobbing for apples and eating treacle toffee, carving pumpkins with my parents and decorating the house in gruesome props.

So when the opportunity arose to be transformed into whatever I wanted by two of the best makeup artists in town, my inner child jumped up and down excitedly.

David Nicholson and Rachel Hunt, owners of Creature Features Studios, based at Blakemere Craft Centre in Sandiway, have been transforming both young and old alike into whatever their imagination can think of for just over 12 months.

Working with a wide range of make-up mediums from gelatine to foam latex appliances, there really is no limit to what these creative geniuses can do.

“We can do anything really from basic makeup to completely changing the shape of your face,” said David. “We use different appliances to create things like vampire brows and trauma scars.

“Zombies are really popular at the moment – we’ve had a quite a few people asking for them this year and we also get a lot of requests for werewolves, vampires and even the Terminator.”

As a lifelong Batman fan, I decided to go for something both visual and instantly recognisable – Heath Ledger’s The Joker.

An average session lasts around 90 minutes, but varies depending on what you’re having done and took just over an hour for my transformation from Northwich Reporter to psychopathic clown.

The scars, created using a gel-like substance which was cut into and stuck onto my face, looked so real that I got quite a few odd looks on the way back to the office - although I guess the green wig, white makeup and black eyes didn’t really help.
