MICHAEL Carr will leave Vics for Morecambe.
Dino Maamria told the Guardian today that the midfielder had called him to say he would not be returning to the Marston's Arena.
"He has agreed terms," said the Vics boss.
"He rang me to say thanks for everything and that he had enjoyed his time working with me.
"I completely understand his situation."
Maamria revealed that, contrary to popular belief, Carr's contract was not one of the most expensive at the club.
Vics offered him an improved deal but the former Macclesfield Town man had already made up his mind to seek a move to a Football League club.
"His deal was not as good as some other players," said Maamria.
"I think he struggled to understand that because he was one of our best players without doubt.
"He certainly had a tough season but I was delighted with how it ended as he scored two vital goals to help us stay up."
Carr, appointed captain by Maamria when he took over as temporary manager in September, asked to leave during the January transfer window but, one call from Chester City aside, there was no interest in him from other clubs.
He was stripped of the captaincy and left out of the team soon after.
Vics could have demanded a fee then as he was still under contract, a situation that has changed now.
Former England C international Carr, 24, met Morecambe manager Sammy McIllroy in the days after Vics' final league encounter of the campaign against Cambridge.
The move has not yet been made official by the League Two outfit, but Maamria said he expected an announcement shortly.
"I wish him all the best," he added.
"Carrsy deserves a chance to test himself at a higher level and I hope he does well."
Carr made 169 appearances for Northwich - 14 as sub - since switching from Macclesfield in 2005, scoring 28 times.
