Riverside flats in the pipeline

A COMPLEX of luxurious retirement flats could be in the pipeline for Northwich.

Congleton-based company Gladman Developments wants to build 55 self-contained apartments on land in Chesterway next to the River Dane. It has applied to the borough council for planning permission.

The complex would be category two sheltered accommodation, which usually means a warden will be on site. But in this case, the warden will be replaced with a discreet concierge' who will be on hand to manage the scheme and assist with the day to day welfare of the residents.

Facilities at the development for over 55s will include a fitness suite and a communal lounge. The plans will be considered by the borough council in July.

An element of affordable housing will be included but the complex will mainly target those who want to downsize but do not want to take the traditional retirement scheme root.

Director Peter Lynas said: "Chesterway is a fantastic location. We're planning to build homes that offer a new lifestyle for active, discerning downsizers who are looking for independence today but peace of mind for the future, and with the town centre so close and Northwich's great transport links, this site is ideal."

If given the go-ahead, developers predict work could start before the end of the year.

The site does lie in a known flood pan as identified by the Environment Agency. However, any issues arising from this will be dealt with in the planning stages.

"Northwich's great transport links" My god is this man living on the same planet as us ordinary folk?

This is a very bad idea for Northwich. The river bank near the town centre already accommodates retirement flats and now there is a proposal for more.

How can this town be transformed if it planning the centre of town to be dedicated to accommodation ONLY for those in retirement age!

The town needs development to suit all ages and if it is to attempt to develop the Northwich Vision project, retirement flats are by no means the answer to solving the town's problems.

Lots of young professional people are already deserting the town in favour of city life as it is.

Will Northwich become the town known for Old Folk Only!

Good grief!

Why would retired people want to buy an apartment close to a smelly river in the centre of a town, right next to where dozens of youths hang out and on the main thoroughfare home for late night drinkers?
Shouldn't people look forward to retiring to the countryside?

Yet again developers cashing in on a sure thing without a care about the actual need of the population of a town.

I hope that they don't get planning but with the changes being made to the council its likely to slip through unchallenged.

When I was moving house 18 months ago a local estate agent told me he knew a developer who wanted to build apartments on this land - the only problem being that noone would want to rent them and he'd not recoup his outlay. This is obviously why the retirement market is now being focused upon. What Northwich really needs are small - medium size houses that working people from Northwich can actually afford. Probably the next place earmarked for more apartments is the old Regal Cinema site!
