Vince quits as Albion boss
 |
| Jim Vince |
JIM Vince has walked out on Witton following their play off semi final defeat.
He handed in his notice today and leaves Wincham Park with immediate effect after two and a half years at the helm.
"It is with great regret that Witton Albion announce the resignation of Jim Vince," read a club statement.
"The board wish to thank Jim for two and a half excellent seasons under his leadership."
Vince met chairman Mike Worthington at Wincham Park this morning and it is as a result of that summit he has decided to quit.
The Guardian understands assistant manager Nigel Deeley has also departed although the club has yet to confirm this.
There is no suggestion that Vince has another job lined up, nor has the club been approached by any admirers of the 40-year-old.
Witton fell short in the play offs for the second successive season last night, Tuesday, after they crashed out on penalties against Buxton.
It was a bitter double whammy for Vince as days earlier rivals Fleetwood clinched the title after a season-long battle that Albion had edged for seven months.
Last week there came the first inkling that change may be afoot at Albion as it became clear Vince had yet to sign a new contract with the club.
His current deal was due to run out this month.
"What happens next depends on whether we get promoted or not," said chairman Mike Worthington.

There was no suggestion he intended to part company with the manager he described as the best' he had worked with in his decade-long tenure.
Worthington stressed to the Guardian that he wanted Vince to stay regardless of which division Witton found themselves in next term.
The Guardian understands there was no dispute between the pair over the terms of a new deal, which rules that out as a reason for Vince's departure.
On the contrary, both parties made it known they had 'agreed in principle' on an improved deal as a reward for Vince's progress in taking the team to the top of the UniBond Premier Division playing exciting, attacking football.
Nobody has been placed in temporary charge of team affairs but, with a number of star players known to have clauses in their contracts permitting them to leave the club should Vince severe ties, then there are real fears for a exodus.
The Guardian has tried to contact Mike Worthington this afternoon, but so far he has been unavailable for comment.
More to follow.
What do you think? Was Jim Vince the right man to lead Witton despite their failure to earn promotion? What does his departure mean for the future of the club? Click on the comment tab below and let us know your thoughts.

Worthington is a disgrace for letting Jim leave this Club. I hope the supporters will let their full feelings known on Saturday night. AFter how far Jim Vince has taken this CLub, then Worthington should of been doing EVERYTHING in his power to secure Jim's future at Witton Albion.

All the rhetoric that Mike Worthington spouts about wanting what is best for the club is clearly self righteous nonsense. Jim Vince was the man who could deliver for Witton Albion, despite the meagre buget he had to work with. Without Jim our mid table budget will see us finishing there. Nice work Mike, how about you follow Jim out of the door?

What was Mike Worthington supposed to do if Jim has resigned? Perhaps Jim felt he had taken the club as far as he could falling short at exactly the same point this season as last. We should thank Jim for his excellent work and move forwards. There may have been nothing the chairman could have done to keep him anyway.

To be honest dont think it is mike worthingtons fault, if jim left for more money than we can afford we have to move on. Jim did not take us up but has taken the club forward, so lets bring someone in that can do what Jim could not.

What an absolute disgrace that we have let Jim go. He's been building for 2 and a half years and this is all now going to be for nothing. There is obviously a reason that it has come to this and I think that the board have got some questions to answer. The one thing needed to ensure that we could keep some sort of momentum going was Jim.... now we're going to be left with nothing. Jim thanks for the last 2 and a half seasons, it's safe to say all of the fans want you back

The suggestion that Jim has left for money is ridiculous. He was managing our reserve team 3 seasons ago, so the suggestion that money has any baring on him being at Witton is a weak one.

Think you'll find that the reasoning behind the sad departure of both Jim & Nigel - and probably now the whole team - lies deeply embedded within one individual's action

Jim did a lot for this club and i'm saddened to see him go - a good manager and a thoroughly good bloke. He brought in some great players - are we to see them leave too?!
Worthington had best have some sort of plan otherwise we're up the creek.

Also note that the true voice of Witton Albion - the Fan's superb website - has been off the air since last night. Needless to say the club's "official" website carries nothing on this grave matter

Greg & Robbo, how do you [bold]KNOW[/bold] Jim hasn't left for money reasons? The only way you will know, is if both Jim & Mike speak face to face in front of everone, and that won't happen. If someone resign's as the articel say's there may have been no way of stopping him. If it was money, after two near misses would you put the club financially at risk for a third try with the same manager? Only time will tell whether this is good or bad news for our club.

With losing the manager, the assistant and most likely a large majority of the players I can't see how the club can move forward. We chould be building upon the last two seasons, not starting from scratch with nothing. I hope the chairman has something pretty special lined up! Good luck to Jim and Nigel.

Signings like Rapley and Crowe - rubbish mercenaries. If these are Jim's legacy then Raplpey can follow Crowe and him out the door.
The bottom line is that Buxton, who finished with 21 points less than us wanted it more last night and deserved to win.
They outplayed us and out sang us.
If part of management is motivation, then this was clearly missing.
We fell short this year as last and perhaps the time was right for a change.
Oh and for those of you who say it is not about money, i wouldn't be so sure .......

I think it's a little unfair to blame Mike Worthington at this stage.
Lets see what comes out in the cold light of day before jumping on the blame campaign.
Chad has eluded to a possible reason why Jim has gone so lets see what comes out of this.
It may just be a case of Jim feeling he has nothing more to offer and has taken us as far as he can.
Lets just stick together and wait and see before we start demanding mass board resignations!

Everybody is showing support for Jim in this situation. But i'm sorry to say, i'm finding it difficult to understand why? The fans have been fantastic in supporting him ALL season and been absolutely heartbroken 2 years in a row. After the game i just kept thinking next season has to be our time. Now Jim hasnt stuck with us he has walked out on us when we are all gutted enough. We now have to start from scratch and possibly lose most of the best squad we have had for years. I'm very very dissapointed in him for doing this to us at a time like this.

Dave, yes we were outplayed last night. Lets move on from that.
Outsang us? Maybe, but it works both ways and to be fair everybody at the Buxton end was making a racket, whereas Witton rely on the same 30-40 to get behind the team while the rest prefer to do nothing.

Must agree with Scott, I would have thought Jim Vince would be sensible enough to take a step back for a couple of weeks and when the emotions subside a little make a decision then.

Well we can't do anything about this ridiculous situation, who should be Witton's next Manager?
Buxton's John Reed or, dare I say it, Nantwich's Steve Davis look good candidates for me.

I have just got off the phone to Jim and he has asked me to put a few things straight on here. I imagine this will come out officially in the coming days. Jim Vince did not want to leave Witton Albion Football Club. He is absolutely gutted to leave and wants to thank the fans for their tremendous support whilst he has been at the club. His intention was to sign a contract this week that would see him here at the club next season, this had already been agreed in principle. After having a conversation with the chairman today, a series of events led to Jim having to stick up for his players and such has led him to handing his resignation in. Jim feels that he was backed into a corner by the board and he had no alternative but to resign. This was in no way to do with money for Jim, he had agreed his deal and was ready to sign it. As above, Jim would like to thank the fans for making managing the club such an enjoyable time and he is extremely unhappy about the way things have ended.

The cold honest truth is that Jim has failed in his objective of taking Witton up, BUT how many of us will be saying this time next year, in 2 years, 3 years, 10 years or more, "weren't we a much better team when JV was in charge". Keeping this squad together remains our best chance of getting out of this league in the near future. If Jim, Nige, and therefore the bulk of the squad leave, then our immediate prospects leave with them. You can have a knee-jerk reaction to the last few disappointing performances, but the facts don't lie, and the amount of points we have accumulated and goals that we have scored are testament to how good a job JV has done in the least few seasons.

Regardless of missing out on promotion the progress over the past 2 years under Jim Vince has been enormous. The increase in crowds and the quality of football has been superb. Jim has not left for more money or another job (although he will be offered one very quickly - Altrincham if they have ever sense)! Mike Worthington and the Board are responsible for the Manager's appointment and contract and better have an explanation as to why this has happened and what they plan to do to make sure that this club continues to make progress rather than going backwards.

Luckily Jim leaves us in a position where we are an attractive proposition to managers looking for another club. I'm sure Mr Worthington will forget this when the new man is appointed and give himself an ill deserved pat on the back.

I assume you have spoken to Mike Worthington as well to give a balanced view point?
There are always two sides to a story and I think we are better to hear what both sides are willing to commit to print, knowing that a falsehood could lead to further action.
P.S. I am certainly not a vics fan.

I think it's very unfair for everyone to go "off on one" and blame the chairman/board and/or JV. The blame for this situation lays squarely on the shoulders of the players.
Managers come and go - and as disappointed as we all are, we should thank JV and Nige for all their hard work over the past couple of seasons and move on.
I'm sure JV will get another post very soon, if not sooner!
If the players move on also, then so be it. Here's to next season, come on the Albion!

GUTTED for all concerned. I've not been a Wittoner long but Jim had such a massive impact on the whole of the club, not just the 1st team but right down to the under 4's & 5's. There are 1st team players in schools, libraries etc promoting the club and its ethos. The soccer schools during the holidays were fantastic and developed all those that attended.
Unfortunately we'll end up with more journey men and dodgy ex-pro's who only care about ££££'s.
All the best Jim

Absolutely devestated by the news. The chairman HAS to do what is right and that is to keep the 2 men that has turned this club into a FANTASIC club both on and off the field. Now is the time to take action and give us great supporters what we deserve, the best and that is Jim Vince and Nigel Deeley.
SORT IT OUT.

Steve, you might want to check out Jim's comments in the interview he's done with Andy Simpson. Sound familiar?

I have spoke to Jim this afternoon, you will all find out soon why he's left the club
He had no other choice as he was given no other option after meeting with the chairman today.
It's a very sad day in the life of Witton Albion, and I know Jim will manager another club and I wish him all the best, for all he as done for us all
You will be sadly missed Jim.

A group of concerned shareholders met with the board this evening where the chairman put forward his version of events, which vary considerably from Jim's. We are very concerned by this matter, and stressed to the board that they should take any feasible action to keep Jim Vince at the club, for footballing reasons, but also for the financial wellbeing of the club.

It doesn't surprise me that everything the chairman said is different to Jim's version of events. There is something that doesn't add up at all. For some reason the chairman wanted Jim out of the club. Gone with Jim is any chance this club had of another shot at promotion next season. I think it's time that the chairman stood aside as there is an ulterior motive to proceedings at the moment that is very worrying indeed. There is no smoke without fire Mr Worthington, just what is going on?

Can I please urge all concerned not to get carried away with all this anonymous banter.
No doubt there is no end of nonsense being put forward from over the canal, who have very short memories by the way.
As I said before, until we hear from the persons involved, all this speculation and hearsay is just that, speculation and hearsay.
Signed Alex Ferguson!

Mike Worthington couldn't care less if Witton are fighting for promotion, or if we are languishing in mid-table. The way Worthington sees it is if Jim goes and the better-paid players go too, then the Club's outgoings are vastly reduced. What the Chairman should be doing is working on improving the Club's commercial activity to enable us to afford to keep Jim and his squad at the Club. Worthington is taking the easy option, and is now trying to paint JV as the villain of the piece. Whilst being grateful for what Worthington once did for the Club, i can't help but feel that he has taken us as far as he is ever going to, and for WItton to progress then it is time for Mike to do the decent thing and step aside. As someone said last night, Mike Worthington is just one step away from becoming another Mike Connett.

'By the way how many social events do you attend and how much do you spend in the club shop??'
As one of the individuals responsible for arranging and publicising the said social events, then i tend to be at the vast majority of them!!
How is the future of the Club secured on gates of less than 200 if we once again drift into mid-table mediocrity? The good-feeling that has been built up over the last 2 seasons will all be in vain, and we will be back to square 1.
Worthington has been quoted as saying that the contract was agreed some time ago, so if the Club cannot afford it then why was it agreed by the Chariman in the first place?? If Jim just wanted to get his hands on the money then why hasn't he just signed the -pre-agreed contract??

What concerns me is that there was no common ground between the Chairman's story and Jim's story - unusual in such circumstances.
I have spoken to Jim on numerous occasions, and played poker with him in the club most Thursday nights, and have never had any reason to doubt what he says - although in this situation I am taking what he says with a little pinch of salt.
Sadly, where the chairman is involved - and admittedly this is just gut instinct - I get the impression that there is considerably more spin, and I don't think any of the shareholders present at the board meeting last night were fooled by Mr Worthington's slick answers, placing the blame squarely on Jim's shoulders. There is no smoke without fire.

All of this criticism aimed at the Chairman is achieving nothing. The manager has gone - let's all pull together and move forward.
For someone to suggest MW "do the decent thing and step aside" is quite simply pathetic. The recovery of this club is down to MW (plus the dedication of the supporters) and as I said earlier JV would have left sooner or later anyhow. Also, I don't see many white knights with fistfuls of cash knocking on the gates of WP, do you?
Let's all just get on with it.

With all due respect Eddie, it's much easier to be so calm about it all when posting from Otley. Through no fault of your own, you don't have your finger on the pulse in the way that those closer to Wincham have - and by the same token will not be here to witness a 2nd-rate side take to the field next season.
Yes the recovery of the Club was in large parts down to MW, but that doesn't mean that there wont come a time when he has taken us as far as it is possible for him to take us. It is no coincidence that a number of people associated with Witton Albion have left the Club blaming MW's approach as their primary reason. At some point we will have to accept that MW's time is up.

Sorry Robbo, but you have shown me no respect whatsoever. What the hell gives you the right to say that.
Do you know who I am? Do you know my family's connections to WAFC for more years than I care to remember?
And I will be there next season and the seasons after that, despite your assumption to the contrary.
I find your posting an insult.

I'm sorry that you feel that way Eddie, and yes i do know who you and your family are. I stand with Dave C at Witton games and speak to Steve C on a regular basis. My point is that there is alot going on at Witton that you are probably not aware of, and to be criticising those that are aware of it just because we are expressing concern is why i am making the point above. As quoted above, i mean you no disrespect.

The board demonstrated their level of competence last night when informing the shareholders that we'd spent £4k over the wage budget for this season.
Jim Vince was given permission to do this by the board - the same board who budgeted this season based on £16k from cup matches, and a reasonable wedge from selling another player (which didn't happen). That kind of budgeting is amateurish and unprofessional. The board appear to place little or no value on exploiting the club commercially and improving the club's revenue streams beyond gate receipts and football prize money - both of which will dip without JV. Not to mention the players whose contracts will be cancelled as a direct result of Jim's resignation - yes, most of the players involved are under 23, so will be covered by the Bosman ruling if they decide to move on, but the amount we could expect to get is significantly less than if we had the players fully contracted.
From a business perspective, this season has been disasterous, there looks to be little improvement in terms of commercial activity going forwards, and for that reason alone, it is time for a change at the top.

I can only speak generally, but I have a friend on the board of a Conference North club and i have spoken to him about this and with the greatest respect i think you will find that the board agree a budget and then the manager "manages" the budget and spends it as he sees fit. An overspend is the manager's responsibility and his performance is judged accordingly.
I agree that the buck stops with the Board because they have to plan to mitigate the shortfall, though i feel your answer would have been more indignant had the Board slashed Jim's budget by £1,000 a week for the last month of the season to make up the difference.
These are only my thoughts and i certainly defend your right to your opinions.
With reference to MW, i disagree that it is time for a change as i don't think you will find a more decent hard working person. Remember also that if you lose MW, you will probably lose Paul Worthington the Finance Director as well.
Any continuity at all would be lost then and we would be in an even worse position going forward.
If someone with a stack of money came a long, who could take the club to a radically new level then great, but let's be honest, that is not goint to happen unless someone wins the EuroMillions on Friday night.
Let's hope there is chance for a resolution or at least time to breath and things can get sorted out a bit.
All the best to all Wittoners, whatever your views!

With what has happened, I think it is definitely time for the chairman to step aside. He has done a good job so far and saved us from the brink but we have gone as far as we possibly can with him at the helm. Losing Jim has set us back years, we can't afford for something like this to happen again in the future so it's time for the chairman to go

You may well be right and the Jim situation is dreadful, but lets think about the job advert.
"Individual wanted to fill full time, unpaid role for no appreciation whatsoever from anyone. Abuse guaranteed from all quarters if things go wrong".
Any takers?

Dear all,
I am a footie fan first and foremost, and also fortunate enough have connections with the running of clubs of a similar size and nature to your own.
Whilst i can understand the frustrations of the fans/shareholders/di
rectors with the finale of your season, the posts on this board are both unneccessary and damaging to all concerned.
At the end of the day, only the manager and the chairman are aware of what the underlying problem is (if any). After all, if you listen to each party you will only get their opinion.
It would appear from some postings that supporters/sharehold
ers were present at a meeting last night. If that is the case, items discussed at such board levels should not be publically broadcast on boards like this, no matter which party you support. It is not doing your club any favours.
At the end of the day managers and chairmen alike will come and go, some will be liked and some will be disliked. Decisions are made which cannot possibly please everyone. It is the club which prevails in the long run, and true supporters of the [bold]club[/bold] will appreciate this.
Whilst the passion of the supporters is vitally important, so to are the hours of unpaid time and effort put into clubs up and down the country by directors, employees and voluntary helpers who run these clubs.
For the good of your club, and other clubs alike, stop dragging the chairman and manager through the dirt.
yours in sport.

For the good of your club, and other clubs alike, stop dragging the chairman and manager through the dirt.
yours in sport.

To clarify, there wasn't a shareholders meeting last night. There was a board meeting scheduled, at which some of the shareholders asked to address the board, and to hear the board's version of events.

There is plenty of nonsense been said by several numpties who think they know what is the best for WAFC.
These are the same people who are most certainly supporters but who do not have a clue how to run a business.
The same people who thought MW was the best thing since sliced bread when he came to WAFC a decade ago and saved them
Now the same people are calling for him to step aside, why because they dont like the way he does things. Of course there is some diasgreement with JV, that should remain private between JV and the Board. The so called shareholders who went to the meeting last night, bit pointless MW has a huge shareholding with many supporters on the board. MW has loaned the club money, with others and that money is outstanding. So to all you people who think you no best, put your money up pay off all the loans and run the club. See how good you are then.

Lets see what happens then RS, this is disastrous for the club and everybody involved. We could easily end up getting relegated next season at this rate from the figures that are being thrown about. Suppose that would be great business??

A business needs to protect it's assets. JV, ND, and the playing squad are very big assets of WAFC.
For saving WAFC Mike Worthington was the best thing sinced sliced bread AT THAT TIME. However, the Club has moved forward since then - in part thanks to the work of MW. Bobby Charlton did a great job for England at one point - i couldn't imagine him getting a call up now though!

Relegated or bankrupt and out of existence which the club would have been without MW.
Robbo you do talk nonsense, the fact that WAFC finished runners up for 2 season's is down to the fact that the club had a good manager, but also had a good chairman who backed the manager with the resouces needed to challenge for promotion. Clearly this season was to have been the big one and it hasn't happened, who's fault is that the Chairman's? No it is down to the Manager and the Players who ended up bottling it.
So the Chairman tells the Manager what the budget will be, one for Conference North one for Unibond. So when the club stays where it is, the manager decides he hasn't got the support of the Chairman because the budget is back to what it was probably the previous year. Clearly the manager is not happy and walks, at the end of the day the manager and the players let the supporters, shareholders and the board down.
So Robbo instead of calling the Chairman, why not offer to buy him out and have a go, put your money where your mouth is, you have such a big opinion why not take the role on and see how good you are.
JV has gone, move on....

On one hand you all say the board was irresponsible for last season's overspend, now your saying the sensible decision to cut out the overspend this season wont work!
I was at the AGM in November where at least the chairman had the balls to tell everyone the board had decided to make that overspend gamble. I didnt see you stand up and say "no Mr Chairman please dont increase the playing budget".
Can you enlighten us all as to your cunning financial ideas, and sharp business accumen??
