SALE Nomads production of What the Butler Saw is a perfect example of how farce should be played.

It successfully cocks a snoop at the establishment as the actors rush around sometimes in complete confusion expressing their feelings through facial expression and making 150 entrances and exits leading to a chaotic climax.

This black comedy centres on Dr Prentice’s psychiatric clinic where, instead of interviewing Geraldine Barclay for a secretarial position, he asks her to strip and test a contraceptive device.

One of his most repetitive expressions to all and sundry is “Take your clothes off”

His encounter with Geraldine is only the start of the goings on at the clinic

If I were to reveal what happens when Mrs Prentice arrives I would be giving away the plot.

Suffice it to say she, herself, has just enjoyed a liaison with a young page at the Station Hotel (Sam Jones).

Under the expert direction of David Black the cast capture the essence of this comedy with much dressing and undressing and the necessary fast pace

Sandie Cowle reduces Geraldine from an optimistic young woman to a nervous wreck. Roberto Lavorini and Jenny Hollinshead are well matched as the warring Dr and Mrs Prentice whilst one oif the funniest roles, that of Dr Rance, an inspector of Psychiatric Clinics, who dubs all he meets insane, is portrayed amusingly by Joe Cramsie.

Congratulations to the technical team who create perfectly timed sound and special effects.

A riotous time is had by all.
