BILL Kenwright’s classic production of the Shawshank Redemption, based on Stephen King’s novel, is coming to The Lowry. from Monday, September 5 to Saturday, September 10.

It follows Andy Dufresne, a banker in receipt of a double life sentence in the notorious Shawshank penitentiary for the murder of his wife and her lover.

Protesting his innocence he becomes friends with the prison fixer Red and things improve.

When warden Stammas starts to bully Andy into subservience, a desperate plan is hatched.

The movie of the same name was nominated for seven Academy awards.

The role of Andy Dufresne will be played by EastEnders’ star Paul Nicholls (Joe Wicks).

Ben Onwukwe as Red, boasts a 30 year stage and television career, his most prominent role being Stuart ‘Recall’ McKenzie in London’s Burning.

Jack Ellis will play Warden Stammas. He has played a prison warder before in the ITV series Bad Girls.

The play will be directed by international director, David Esbjornson’
