Madonna, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran are among the music stars who will be performing at the 2015 Brit Awards at London’s O2 Arena.

But how will they compare to these acts?

Here are the definitive performances in Brits history:

Whitney Houston (1987)

Whitney Houston gave a live performance of How Will I Know at the 1987 ceremony, wowing audiences with her flawless vocals.

Bananarama (1988)

All three original members – Sara Dallin, Keren Woodward and Siobhan Fahey – gave their final performance of their single Love In The First Degree, accompanied by 14 half-naked male dancers, at the Brits in 1988, then known as the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) Awards.

The KLF (1992)

British acid house group The KLF definitely livened up the awards, when they took to the stage after being crowned best British group, which they shared with Simply Red.

Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty collaborated with grindcore metal band Extreme Noise Terror to perform a death metal version of 3am Eternal, which prompted conductor Sir Georg Solti to walk out in disgust. Bill fired blanks from a machine gun over the audience before KLF announcer Scott Piering said: “Ladies and gentlemen, The KLF have now left the music business.”

Suede (1993)

Brett Anderson and his Suede bandmates admitted singing their single Animal Nitrate at the Brits in 1993 felt “ridiculously corporate”, despite the raw energy of their performance. But the band’s last-minute decision to play at the ceremony paid off, because their debut album won the Mercury Prize.

Michael Jackson (featuring Jarvis Cocker) (1996)

Michael Jackson was joined by a rather unexpected – and unwanted – guest at his Brits performance of Earth Song, when Pulp frontman Jarvis stormed the stage in protest at his act, which saw the King of Pop portrayed as a Jesus Christ-like figure surrounded by children.

Spice Girls (1997)

At the height of Spicemania, the Spice Girls performed their hits, Wannabe and Who Do You Think You Are at the awards in 1997. Geri Halliwell’s Union Jack dress, made from a tea towel, was the huge talking point of that year.

Sir Tom Jones and Robbie Williams (1998)

Robbie Williams wore guy-liner and an all-black leather outfit, as he gyrated and danced alongside Tom while they performed a medley from The Full Monty. And this was before the days of twerking!

Geri Halliwell (2000)

Geri snubbed her Spice Girls bandmates, who received the outstanding contribution award at the 2000 Brit awards. Instead, she made headlines when she performed her solo No 1 single Bag It Up, straddling a pole between a pair of giant inflatable legs.

Destiny’s Child (2001)

Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams donned tiny gold outfits to perform Independent Woman Part 1, representing girl power after the Spice Girls’ split.

Kylie Minogue (2002)

Kylie Minogue’s Brits performance of Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, with the melody of Blue Monday by New Order, has remained one of her best stage moments. That tiny white dress! Those thigh-high silver boots! The giant CD player! And the song isn’t half bad either.

Justin Timberlake and Kylie Minogue (2003)

Justin Timberlake showed off his slick dance moves, while Kylie Minogue demonstrated her rapping skills in this unforgettable duet featuring JT’s hits Cry Me A River and Like I Love You, and Blondie’s Rapture. Cheeky Justin even grabbed the famous Minogue bottom…

Scissor Sisters (2005)

There’s no way the Scissor Sisters’ performance of Take Your Mama won’t make you smile, especially with the pink chicken laying gold eggs, Jake Shears’ half-dressed outfit and Ana Matronic’s canary yellow dress.

Kanye West (2006)

Rapper Kanye West was joined by 77 ladies dressed in bikinis and spray-painted gold for his performance of Gold Digger at the 2006 event.

Oasis (2007)

Oasis, who were awarded the outstanding contribution to music prize, brought energy to the show with their rendition of Don’t Look Back In Anger.

Mark Ronson, Adele, Amy Winehouse and Daniel Merriweather (2008)

Mark was joined by some special friends – Adele, Amy Winehouse and Daniel Merriweather – for his Brits medley performance. Adele helped on a version of Coldplay’s God Put A Smile Upon Your Face, then Daniel dropped his version of Stop Me before Amy triumphed with Valerie. That’s a pretty formidable medley.

Girls Aloud (2009)

Girls Aloud made their Brits debut in 2009 with their single The Promise, and they definitely made an entrance. Band members Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts, Sarah Harding and Kimberley Walsh donned tiny neutral-coloured costumes, while covering their modesty with pink feathered fans.

Dizzee Rascal and Florence Welch (2009)

The grime star, suited and booted, teamed up with the flame-haired Florence + The Machine singer, who emerged from a giant disco ball, for a special performance of You Got The Dirtee Love, with plenty of harps.

Pet Shop Boys, Lady Gaga and Brandon Flowers (2009)

To celebrate their outstanding contribution to music gong, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe enlisted the help of Lady Gaga and The Killers’ frontman Brandon Flowers to close the 2009 ceremony. Gaga wore a wacky teapot-inspired outfit to sing What Have I Done To Deserve This? and West End Girls, the latter of which she performed alongside Brandon.

Lady Gaga (2010)

Lady Gaga performed a tribute to fashion designer Alexander McQueen, who died days before the Brit Awards in 2010. Dressed in a lace bodysuit, she sang Telephone and Dance In The Dark.

Adele (2011)

Adele showed off her impressive set of lungs when she performed an acoustic rendition of Someone Like You at the 2011 ceremony. With a piano as her sole accompaniment, her moving performance launched the track 46 spots up the UK charts to the top spot.

Tinie Tempah (2011)

Adele wasn’t the only music star who stole the spotlight at the 2011 Brits. Tinie Tempah was accompanied by Labrinth and Eric Turner – and a number of clones – for a medley of Written In The Stars, Miami 2 Ibiza and Pass Out.

Plan B (2011)

Plan B, aka Ben Drew, heated up the Brits in 2011 when a man on fire ran across the stage as he ended his performance. Host James Corden described the incident as a “really violent episode of Porridge” and joked: “Is Justin Bieber OK? The amount of hair products that boy uses, he could have gone up in flames.”

Disclosure, Lorde and AlunaGeorge (2014)

New Zealand singer Lorde collaborated with AlunaGeorge and Disclosure for a version of Royals and White Noise, one of the highlights of last year’s ceremony.
