AN evening of food and drink proved to be a resounding success at the Bulls Head in Davenham.
As you walk in, the pub's character is clearly evident - with its low ceilings and exposed beams - resulting in the pub having a homely atmosphere.
My companion and I arrived at 6pm on a weekday and the place had a buzz about it, which was encouraging.
The meat was stacked high, and was topped off with an egg and a huge sized portion of black pudding.

There was an option of sitting in the dining area, but due to a function we decided to eat downstairs, next to the bar.
The menu featured many of the pub classics, including sausage and mash, rump steak, and smothered chicken.
We both decided to opt for a starter, and although there was only a choice of five, we both found a dish that suited our appetite.
I went for the fishcakes, which were well presented on a bed of lettuce, and a small amount of Thai-style chilli sauce. The four fishcakes were tasty and full of flavour, but for a starter I was surprised there were as many as four.
My companion opted for creamy mushrooms on a garlic bread base. The dish was certainly full of garlic, and we both agreed that the starters were a success.
The decision on mains was a tough one, but in the end I plumped for the mixed grill. At £11.95, it was the most expensive dish on the menu, but it was worth it.
The dish consisted of a combination of steak, pork, sausage and gammon - all provided by Webbs Butchers on Witton Street.
The meat was stacked high, and was topped off with an egg and a huge sized portion of black pudding.
A large amount of well-cooked home made chips, two cooked tomatoes and garden peas finished the dish off.
It was splendid. The meat was full of flavour and well cooked, and the chips were fantastic.
I wasn't asked how I wanted my steak cooking, but that would be nit-picking.
My companion decided on the lamb shank in a red wine gravy for her main course. The waitress informed us after we had ordered that the red wine gravy was to be replaced with a mint gravy.
We both appreciated the fact they told us, I have had experience in the past where changes to the dish haven't been relayed back to us.
The lamb shank was perfectly cooked, with the meat literally falling of the bone, and the accompanying mash was creamy and light.
We mulled over the dessert menu, but decided we didn't want to spoil what we had already eaten, and as a result gave it a miss.
I would have no hesitation in recommending the Bulls Head to friends, as the food was of a high quality and reasonably priced.
Two courses, plus a round of drinks came to £34.
