Quality of food very good
The saying that simple food beautifully cooked equals an excellent meal was brilliantly demonstrated when I went to the Golden Pheasant in Lower Peover.
It is true to say the place needs a facelift. I wasn't sure if my companions would want to stay and eat in its rather drab, shabby room because at first I didn't.
The situation wasn't made any easier because there were no staff around when we arrived.
But appearances can be deceptive and I was delighted when we did eat. Not only was the food delicious but the service was absolutely impeccable.
We sat at a comfortable table by the fire and I started with mushroom and cheddar soup (£2.95) which was delicious.
I was slightly concerned the soup might be too cheesy but it wasn't at all. My companions had chicken goujions with tomato salsa (£3.50) and north African meat balls (£4.65).
The meat balls were made up of minted lamb with Moroccan spices in a spicy tomato sauce which was all extremley tasty but be warned, it is extremely hot.
For my main course, I had double cod and chips with peas (£7.95) which I really enjoyed. There was plenty of fish inside the batter - which wasn't too stodgy - and the chips were well cooked.
The vegetables were perfect, slightly crunchy and not left for hours in a pan to go mushy. There was also a good variety.
One of my companions ordered a sirloin steak (£9.95), which she asked to be cooked rare accompanied by Bearnaise sauce.
We were really impressed when the steak arrived cooked as requested. How many times do you ask for a steak rare and it comes medium to well done?
This was perfect and my companion (a fussy eater) was delighted with her meal.
My other companion had a chicken and steak sizzler (£9.95) - succulent strips of chicken and steak with stir-fried vegetables which were beautifully crunchy, all served in a tangy sauce.
We all had to have a dessert and I really enjoyed the all-time favourite of apple crumble and custard - which although was slightly too sweet was nevertheless extremely enjoyable.
My companion's treacle tart was disappointing. It had too much pastry which tended to mask the flavour of the treacle. My other companion decided on ice cream but couldn't eat an adult portion so was duly given a child's portion.
We had a lovely meal which was enhanced by the courteous and friendly service and I've learned a lesson that is don't judge a book by its cover.
