Town deserves proper theatre

Once again the Mid-Cheshire Amateur Operatic Society put on a show to be proud of.

Its Hooray for Hollywood at the Grange School was a triumph in production, design and performance.

The theatre was not full the night my wife and I went (Saturday) but those present were treated to a production that was quite simply superb.

The older members of the society were their usual professional selves. David Roberts and Nigel Porter were as usual extremely funny and of course Barbara Turner was in fine voice as were the rest of the cast.

But I make no apology to them when I say it was the younger members of the society who, on this night anyway, stole the show.

Katie Hart's rendition of Over the Rainbow was brilliant and the two young lads who sang Good Morning from Singing in the Rain with Laura Hobley were a revelation. Laura herself was, as usual, fabulous. The boys proved it was no fluke as they also sang All that Jazz brilliantly for the wonderful Mid-Cheshire dancers.

But I save special praise for Warren Jones.

Warren has been with the Society for some time but is still just a young lad. Whatever part he was given in any show he did, and did well.

But whoever decided to give him Luck be a Lady from Guys and Dolls to sing as a solo did the society a great service.

Warren carried it off as if he had taken the lead dozens of times before. His singing voice caught me by surprise. I have been in the chorus with Warren in a few shows but never realised just how good he was. I know now!

So, in conclusion, thank you once again Mid-Cheshire for another great night out. You never let us down.

Now for my usual moan. Why, oh why has Northwich not got a theatre like this one at the Grange School? Our local council should be ashamed that a private school can raise the cash for such a wonderful amenity while they cannot. Don't tell me it is in the Northwich Vision, most of us will be too blind to see the Vision by the time the council gets around to actually building it.

Stop messing about, put an extra few pounds on the rates and give us a facility to be proud of.
