RESIDENTS are set to win double yellow lines to improve safety at a major road junction in Rudheath.

The lines are due to be introduced at the junction of Shurlach Road and Gadbrook Road, the aim being to tackle the problem of cars parking on Shurlach Road up to the junction to ensure an unobstructed view for drivers looking to join Gadbrook Road.

Rudheath parish councillor Andy Hancock has been pressing for action to tackle the problem, and was delighted by the move to introduce yellow lines.

“The people who park right on the junction are employees at Gadbrook Park,” said Cllr Hancock.

“They park there because there are not enough parking spaces on Gadbrook Park.

“This problem has been going on for at least six months, and residents have approached me about it.

“Cars are parking there all day, from about 7.30am up to 6pm, and it’s an accident waiting to happen as the parked cars make it difficult to see past them when you want to join Gadbrook Road.

“There have been a few near misses, and it’s just laziness on the part of people who want to park as close to Gadbrook Park as possible.

“I am delighted something is happening, and this is the first step in trying to resolve the parking problems on Shurlach Road.”

Along with their concerns over parking near the junction residents in Shurlach Road are also frustrated by not being able to park in front of their homes by all-day parkers.

Cllr Hancock spoken to residents about the possibility of a residents parking scheme in Shurlach Road to tackle the problem, but has been told by Cheshire West and Chester Council the council would not consider such a scheme as most of the homes in Shurlach Road had off-street parking.

Cllr Hancock was told of plans for the double yellow lines by Cheshire West engineer assistant Ian Lovatt.

Mr Lovatt said while he appreciated Cllr Hancock’s concerns over vehicles parking on Shurlach Road, any vehicle which is taxed and insured could park on any adopted highway provided there are no restrictions.

“If parking restrictions were to be implemented, these would also apply to the residents and any visitors,” he said in his email to Cllr Hancock.

“I can however advise you, that we are currently proposing to introduce double yellow lines at the junction of Shurlach Road and Gadbrook Road.

“This will help to improve the safety of the junction and increase the visibility for drivers egressing Shurlach Road.

“If vehicles are currently blocking the driveways to properties, the police can at their discretion place penalty charge notices on them. “They would normally only do this if the driveway was blocked so as to prevent egress.

“If you are experiencing problems with drivers obstructing your driveway, you could request the provision of an access protection marking.

“As the majority of the properties along Shurlach Road have off- street parking facilities, we would not consider the introduction of a residents parking scheme.”
