MOTOR sport marshal Gary Jones is asking Guardian readers to vote for him in the hope of winning the trip of a lifetime.

Gary, 41, is one of 25 people who are in with a chance of landing an unforgettable holiday from The Discovery Channel.

The channel is running a competition asking viewers how they have made their world bigger, and to submit their stories with pictures. Viewers will decide who wins the top prizes.

Gary, from Burslem, Stoke on Trent, is formerly from Northwich, and his parents Marjorie and Douglas live in Lower Peover, having moved recently from the town.

Gary has rebuilt his life after losing his left arm following a motorcycle accident in 1989, and his story was chosen for the shortlist.

“My slogan was – I made my world bigger by becoming the first amputee marshal in the UK, for the stars of the British Touring Cars Championship at Donington Park and Oulton Park,” he said.

“I lost my arm following a serious motorcycle accident. I hit a road sign, pulling four nerves from my spine, meaning I lost all control in my left arm.

“I have enrolled as a race and rally marshal at my local tracks to help others fulfil their ambitions as race or rally drivers.”

Gary has chosen the prize of a gold mining and panning adventure in Alaska if he wins the competition.

The seven-night luxury hotel stay includes a full-day guided hiking excursion on one of the state’s largest glaciers and £1,000 spending money.

The prize is for two people, and Gary has chosen to invite Tony Gleave from Crewe, who introduced him to motor sport, to accompany him.

“I am asking anyone who knows me to vote for me, and the Alaskan trip would be a life-changing experience,” said Gary.

Viewers vote for their three favourite stories from the shortlist, and the voting deadline is midnight on July 6.
