RESIDENTS are being urged to be on their guard against a scam letter saying they have won a million pounds.

Trading Standards officers from Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) have issued the warning about the letters, which claim to be from the Yahoo Mail Lottery.

This lottery does not exist and Yahoo has no connection with the letter at all.

Officers are advising residents never to provide personal information or bank details, not to agree to pay to receive the prize, check the cost of calling to claim an alleged prize and remember that if it looks too good to be true then it probably is.

Clr Lynn Riley, CWAC’s executive member for localities, said: “This is another scam which we urge people to be on their guard against.

“Even if you see a name that you are familiar with, do not be fooled into thinking that it must be genuine, as often it is another attempt by these unscrupulous individuals to obtain your personal information or money.”
